I think it had more to do with the wife saying its either her or me. In that situation, apparently, an employer does have the right to take an action to preserve the marriage.
It seems a decision rife for abuse.
Also, the employer was dumb for not throwing more money at this to send her away happier.
Look for the ACLU showing up with tongue hanging on the floor wanting to take this one on. It's something that should be challenged harder.
