I am pretty sure the Mayan's were never actually wiped out. There are tons of Mayan descendants still in the area. There was a period where the society as we know it, temple builders etc, ceased to function for reasons we don't know.
The remnant tribes of whatever was left from the collapse, did encounter the Spanish, but that was a few hundred years later, and saying that is relevant is like saying that Daryl Katz was responsible for trading Wayne Gretzky.
