It's true that Calgarians in general are harder on the city of Edmonton. Lots of people refer to it as a dump or a lesser city when you get into conversations about the cities in general. You won't hear too many Edmontonians talking smack about Calgary in general.

It's false when it comes to sports fans. I find Edmonton sports fans extremely abrasive and when it comes to the Flames/Oilers and Stamps/Eskimos rivalries. Edmontonians loath the Calgary teams much more than Calgarians loath the Edmonton teams. There's no getting around it the Edmonton sports fans are the most arrogant in the country as they all still pine about great 80's teams like it was yesterday. I see people in this city wear Oilers gear and never get grief but if you wear Stampeders or Flames gear in Edmonton you will get slagged.
I think what he was getting at is that slagging on Edmonton being an actual dump above and beyond talking about the sports teams must be what he considers 'not turning it off.' To that I counter that his viewpoint is probably based on a notion that the two cities are somehow 'equal but different.' Of course as a Calgarian I'd be deeply offended at being lumped into the same heap as Edmonton civically and maybe that's why he as an Edmontonian feels the way he does.
