Flying lanterns banned
By Betty Ann Adam, The StarPhoenix August 29, 2012
Flying lanterns with open flame have been banned in Saskatoon.
The enchanting fad, which is becoming popular at weddings, has sparked concern among fire officials who say releasing an open flame on the breeze is a fire hazard.
“There’s no control once you let it go,” Saskatoon fire marshal Wayne Rodgers said.
The lanterns, which originated in Asia, are paper balloons with a small candle or fuel cell that heats the air inside, causing it to rise and drift on the breeze.
The provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island banned the lanterns earlier this month. They are also banned in several European countries and Australia.
Local retailers have been asked to remove the lanterns from store shelves and residents, who can still buy them elsewhere, are asked not to use them.
The fire marshal has authority under the Fire Prevention Act to prohibit activities it considers a serious danger to life or property. Those who fail to comply with a request to stop could face a $5,000 fine, Rodgers said.
