That extension isn't comparable to FA contracts. What Dickey has been rumored to been asking for is almost exactly what Ryan Dempster got. A solid pitcher, but not one who's had an 2.95 ERA combined over the past 3 seasons (Dempster had a 4.04 from 2010-2012 for comparison).
James Shields has two years left at $10 million this season and $14 million next. Basically a little less than what Dickey should get in his extension and Dickey still has another year at $5 million left.
It'd be nice to get a guy like comparable to Dickey who's under team control, but those guys simply don't get traded often and if they do, it's for a bigger haul than what we gave up.
