Can't agree with the backlash on the Shire stuff. That stuff is front and center in the Hobbit novel, and in context of what now is a six movie series seems even more important to establish.
As far as 'sensationalist' goes, I guess you could make a case that some of the subplots are sensationalist, ie. Azog, in the sense that they are largely manufactured for the sake of the film. But these are clearly added to give the film(s) different centerpoints. If you're a hardcore purist, you're probably not going to enjoy or even watch these movies to begin with.
