Even though they can't pre-negiotiate and they're acquiring 1 year of Dickey, they'll re-up him at almost any cost if they deal prospects #1 and #3 for him. It would be a PR disaster if they don't.

But yeah as long as they give a qualifying offer if he left they'd get a pick tacked on at the end of the first round and the team that signs would lose their pick (although the pick is just eliminated now, wouldn't go to the Jays). That's assuming he doesn't blow up and is still a type A free agent or whatever they're calling it in the new system.

Edit - a 1st round pick that late is great, but the value is way way less than a good prospect who has already performed at several levels in the minors. The further out they are, the riskier they are, which is why guys like Olt or D'Arnaud are so coveted. For every guy like Syndergaard or D'Arnaud who makes their way through the system clearing each hurdle, there are way more Kevin Ahrens type guys who fall flat when they face pro pitching, or when they hit full season ball for the first time, etc.
