It was actually more of a stalemate... the US burned York (T.O.), Britain burned Washington, and pretty back and forth. The thing is the US force outnumbered the British regulars and Canadian militia about 5 to 1. Interesting little skirmish, but not a wasting by any means.

The U.S. failed in it's objective of annexing Canada, and in fact lost territory that was later returned when peace was made. I would say that is more than a stalemate.
I read that the reason the U.S. allowed themselves to be outnumbered is because they expected the people in Canada to "dancing in the streets", to use a poor cliche.
