I have to admit though, that even though I see very few differences between the people in the two countries as a whole, things like this do make me pause to think about whether I want to stay here when i have a family. Used to be a no brainer that I would stay, now not so much.

I've found that the urban/rural divide is much more prevalent in the US. Like you say, places like New York (or San Francisco or Portland, etc.) seem very similar to Canada, but that doesn't apply to a lot of the country. I've been to nearly every state and major city in the US and there are huge swaths of the country that feel completely alien.
And even in the cities I've noticed big differences in attitudes, especially when the conversation ventures into what are some of the distinguishing features between Canada and the US (health care, gun control, etc.).
