The land itself is beautiful and great. But the people are divided, angry, frustrated, and distrusting more times than not when I'm down there. I'm always left with the impression of a distinct lack of community among people down there. However, I spend most of my time in urban areas, so perhaps the countryside is different.

I think it depends what part of the US you are in.
Having lived in San Jose for 4 years now, I feel just as safe as I did in Alberta. The only crimes here are gang on gang crimes. That's how it was in Alberta too. If I moved to Oakland though which is a few hours away, I don't think I would feel as safe.
