I am excited! I think the movie is going to be great.
One of my biggest complaints about movies is that they aren't long enough on average. A lot of movies cut out important storytelling because they are terrified that audiences can't sit still for more than 90-120 minutes.
Probably the best example of that was Kingdom of Heaven which was a decent movie in theatres (144 minutes). Problem? They cut out 50 minutes and a MAJOR CHARACTER. Ridley Scott was furious that the studio would not let him release his version of the movie. They cut it down despite his extreme misgivings.
Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut is 192 minutes long and is a great movie. The difference between this and the theatrical release is night and day. Coincidentally, it is hard to find the theatrical release on DVD/Blu-Ray because the Director's Cut, as a film, is so superior.
So, after that rant, I am 100% certain I will not have issues with the pacing/length of The Hobbit. I'm sure it will be an awesome film.
Go to the washroom before the movie, stock up on snacks, and immerse yourself in Middle Earth for 169 minutes. Then start looking forward to parts 2 (Dec. 13, 2013) and 3 (July 18, 2014)!
