Zombies would be defeated by nature in a few weeks.
Hot and Cold weather are both enemies to exposed flesh, especially if it happens to be rotting. Animals would also have no problem tearing apart brainless zombies. Natural obstacles such as rivers and cliffs would certianly cut down on the problem as well.
Add to that, the fact that Humans are on top of the food chain because we are smart. We were able to take down animals that are exponentially stronger and faster then us with ease BEFORE guns. Killing zombies would be a walk in the park with any sort of organization.
In short, a zombie "apocalypse" would be more of a zombie "inconvinience". I'd say that surviving humans would have the problem delt with in some way (fortified colonies? Zombie hunting?) in under a year.
This is of course referring to zombies as dumb, contagious humans. If we're talking about zombies that just happen to be super agressive, smart, strong humans (something like I Am Legend) well then... why not join them??
