Not sure that I'd recommend the HFR. I think as has been said, some people will like it and others not. Next time I'd like to see it in 2D and will try to see the second and third parts in that format as well. Not really much of a spoiler, but

It retains the sort of more whimsical feel of the novel by comparison to the LOTR, while still being grounded in that universe and adding some depth by hinting at darker powers behind the scenes in middle earth.
