I think you are underthinking this. If we use a .50 cal, that would rip his head right off, leaving a blooy stump at his C1. Now, you are right, I have never been shot in the head, but I would suggest that the head becoming a red mist is painless, especially if he does not see it coming. Let him have a nice walk in a field, then from about 500 m away reach out and touch him.
