Pretty much exactly this. If you put out a platform and express the reasons your public policy is better for me and the province than the other guy I will vote for your party. If you view your role as opposition as descending into hysterics over minor issues, you're just annoying the crap out of me and wasting time that could be used to convince me. It's an objective analysis. I think the only override scenario for the above general rule is where the candidate I would be voting for pulls a Hunsberger and says something so contrary to my values I can't in good conscience support them.

But I recognize that a lot of people don't determine who they're voting for and absolutely buy into the soap opera, or no one would engage in it. So I don't know that it's terribly realistic to say "the political discourse should meet with my expectations and if doing so is at the expense of the votes of other people who make voting decisions on different grounds, tough luck".
