Actually dogs shows are a very important event in the dog breeding world... (and I'm not talking about the other thread)

...just like horse shows are in the horse industry.

It allows you to show your dog at its best in front of potential breeders who may either want to use your dog in stud or if you have a female, may want to purchase a puppy in any future litters. Currently stud dogs get anywhere from $1000 to $2500 for a breeding and puppies are in the same range.

Also dog shows are not just conformation competitions. There are obedience competitions/trials as well as other events. My dog is currently working towards his obedience title as well as his agility title. When he obtains these, it will be through competition with other dogs at dog shows.
