I was a volunteer for a few retirement home over a number of years. These are the things I would look for.

Look at the food they serve and the quality of it. It can vary quite a bit from one place to another. Do they have chef who prepares all the food or is it shipped in and reheated. Involve your parents on that part of the decison as they will have to eat that food everyday

Look at what the home offers in the way of entertainment for the seniors. Most homes have recreation therapists that create and run activities for the seniors. Talk to someone involved in this and ask them what activities they run and how often these activities are offered.

Walk around the place and look for familes that are visiting thier parents. Ask them for thier opinon of the home and the staff that run it.

Also check the overall condition of the home itself. Is it clean and sanitary and well maintained.

Hope that helps.
