People that bash Red Deer I found have never really spent any time here. They might have gone to one bar or restaurant in the past that doesn't measure up to "Calgary standards" and pass judgement on the whole city based on their one insignificant experience.
I left Calgary for Red Deer 9 years ago and I wouldn't move back to the big city if you tripled my salary. Red Deer has everything you would want in a city except the traffic, NHL hockey and maybe a Bass Pro Shop.
I can get to work in under 10 minutes, I know most of my neighbors and have a big yard. Just 3 of many things I couldn't say about Calgary life.
Nice pace of life, smaller town feel with big city amenities. Works for me.
