For the most part, I haven't had too many issues with Apple Maps. it still needs a little bit of work though.

It likely didn't know the orientation of the vehicle if you hadn't begun rolling - the magnetic compass is of limited value inside a car, and the GPS can't be used to determine direction of travel until you're actually moving enough for a change in position to register.
Not defending DEM, but that kind of behaviour leaving a stationary position at the start of a trip could be expected of any app.
