Default Wal-Mart Vs. Quebec Language Laws

While I don’t think this is the first chip away at a law I consider disgraceful (I have to admit I have full ignorance at the situation over there however). It is interesting to see who pushes back against a government which suppresses Anglophones (again, full ignorance of the situation). Don’t mess with a company’s branding.

Quote:
Several major retailers are taking the Quebec government to court over the provincial language watchdog’s insistence they modify their commercial brand names to include some French.

The retailers include some of the biggest brand names in North America — Walmart, Best Buy and Costco. Their lawyers are expected in Quebec Superior Court on Thursday….

…St-Pierre says all have complied with the rest of Quebec’s language requirements for many years. She says they’re now being forced to comply with a new interpretation of an old law……

…The government is expected to seek new restrictions on who can attend English-language junior colleges, and also extend the language law to smaller businesses….

I would understand if consumers boycotted cooperation’s for not changing their name to French, that makes sense to me, but these government mandated laws have always seemed oppressive (again, full ignorance). I really need someone to explain to me how I am wrong and why these haven’t been shut down by the Supreme Court. In Alberta, am I not allowed to put up a sign to my Chinese restaurant in Chinese?
