That's certainly a concern. The other thing to consider is that any goaltender in that game would have looked like a minor league player. Kiprusoff looked no better than Irving even when the Bruins turned down the heat.

We have to ask what's the first issue then: Getting the Flames to play well in front of non-Kiprusoff goalies or getting back ups capable of winning games?
Irving played many games on the back half of back-to-back situations (5 or 6 out of 7. My memory on a couple escape me). He also had an average shots against of 38/60 minutes and an average goals for by the Flames of about 1.5 per 60 minutes. None of this screams success for winning from Irving's point of view. Even if he stood on his head and had a sub-2.00 GAA, that goals for suggests a losing record would still occur. It seems to me that the way the team is in front of him is an issue too.
