[quote=Igottago][quote=Cheese] Rap does not cross any bridge...it is popular amongst Gangstas and Wiggers and not much else....hence it not being "pop" music.

a lot of rap music is popular and is listened to by a variety of people..not just "gangstas and wiggers" as you would put it. Look at Kanye West...I would classify him as rap, and he is very popular.

Kanye West is more of a cross over...more hip hop/R&B. Same with some of the stuff that came out a few years ago from Outkast with songs like Hey ya, and a few other songs. Even they realized what mainstream is. That album probably sold a pile to the general public...but not for the pure rap on that album. I havent gone to a party with "older" people...LOL... who listen to all types of music, specifically put a Rap CD on to play. I have heard just about every other genre at parties from people in their 20s to their 60s.
We are now seeing a good deal of Black singers going back to the R&B side of things....and I am very happy about that. R&B has a far better chance of being succesful to the mainstream....and staying in the mainstream. Of course image has a lot to do with it too...and I think the Rap industry image is not an image the majority would feel comfortable with.
Pop music is Top 40....it is sing a long, tap along, hum along music. INXS was that genre...who knows what the next version will really be?
As to the idea that Rap is cross generational...I think thats pretty much bunk.
