I'm just hoping we can get some good ol' fashioned metal out of these guys.

Rock Star INXS was a different matter, INXS was always a dance-pop/rock band. It was still great to hear all the candidates and the great backing band behind them that played for everybody go through so many classics. Rock Star was one of the few reality shows (and the only music one) I actually enjoyed.

Now making a supergroup out of has-beens (well maybe) instead of a poignant lifelong band who lost their lead singer might have it's drawbacks. But I still just want to see actually talented journeymen muscians give it their shot and perform recognizable rock classics instead of the swill you get with the amateur rejects on American Idol.

I originally heard that it was going to be Van Halen and I'm not sure if I'm glad or disappointed its not them. I still believe Van Halen will never get over their everything unless they put aside their problems and get back with David Lee Roth for one reunion tour and an album - then they can move on. I just can't imagine anybody in one of these contests fronting Van Halen. I guess slapping a new singer onto a slapped together band makes more sense.

One more plus is the global nature of this contest compared to all the other reality shows that are just oh so American (or the feeble Canadian Idol). I hope they audition in Europe, Australia, and Canada (at least) again. We ended up with two great Canadian talents in the top four last time around and everybody knows the story of J.D. Fortune now. They say that contestants from the first one may be asked back.

The one big problem is that Supernova has no material so we lose the whole "sing the band's songs to avoid elimination" thing and the whole aspect of fitting the mold is tossed so it's really a big crapshoot to see what sounds and sells the best now, which may not be for the best musically or creatively - you end up with more popular swill unless they really do keep the tone down to rock and metal with guests like Slash and Rob Zombie like Navarro says.
