Rather than redo a big job, you may want to just try converting a group of songs and then listen to them. If it sounds OK to you, then no worries. If you don't like it then you may want to bite the bullet.
I've heard AAC gives very good compression, but I don't really want to lock into proprietary codecs. I ripped a few CDs to flac, and they were even larger than I expected. However, I do like the idea of ripping once to lossless then being able to just transcode to whatever quality or size I want.
