I'm a broken record, but I always recommend Seiko in this case. They are a real watch company, and they are pretty much the ultimate bang for your buck brand. The made in Japan ones look much better too.
Diving watches tend to be really hardy, and can withstand a lot of pain, and you can usually still wear them in most daily situations (although usually not suit-worthy).
If being able to withstand anything is the most important thing to you, you might want to look at something quartz like a Suunto, or Casio G-Shock will basically get you to hell and back. But then you have to put up with a chunky watch that can look a little toy-ish.
