It was actually just Hetfield who had the problem with him doing Echobrain. Lars and Hammett had no problems with it. Newsted even confirmed it on MTV: Icon by saying "I was disrespected by the man I respected the most so I had to step out".

Up until now Hetfield thought that if he wanted someone close to him to stay in his life he had to stop them from doing things that he thought could threaten them being in his life. This was due to his dad leaving his mom when he was about 12 and his mom dieing of cancer before he graduated highschool. Cliff Burton dieing in '86 probably was part of it too. He was afraid that if he let Newsted do Echobrain that he might enjoy it more and leave Metallica for it. Something that Newsted said was ridiculous and something Hetfield now realizes was ridiculous.

But I cant say I miss Newsted all that much. Trujillo's style is much more like Burton's and seems to bring a positive vibe to the band since he's very outgoing. I heard that when Newsted was in the band he kind of kept to himself most of the time and let off a negative vibe to the rest of the band.
