The direction they were going musically had nothing do with it. He left because Hetfield wouldnt let him do side projects(Echobrain). Something he would have been able to do had he stayed and gone through therapy with the rest of the band since that helped Hetfield break the control problem he had. He also would have been able to get something else he always wanted which was more input into the songs and lyrics since lyrics for St. Anger were done as a group and not just Hetfield.
