Prop. 457 not easy choice for Glendale residents

Prop. 457 supporters
Mara Soikans: “I voted in favor. When I go to Costco in Glendale and then to one in a different city, I notice the difference in my bill. I love my Diet Coke, and if it makes a difference of a dollar, I would shop elsewhere.”
Raif Saghieh: “Of course, higher taxes makes a difference. We’re already drowned in taxes. For Glendale to say they’ll cut police and fire ... it’s just a threat.”
Bob Lech: “Let whoever wants to buy the Coyotes pay for it himself. Why should it be on our backs? The tax itself may not kill me, but it’s the principle of it. We have cut our household budget, let the city do it, too. Don’t spend money on the team and don’t waste money battling that casino.”
Prop. 457 opponents
Joe Vasquez: “Where else will the money come from? I don’t have any problem with the tax. If I’m shopping in Glendale and the price of something I want to buy is reasonable, I’ll buy it. I won’t drive to another city to save a nickel or dime and waste money on gas. The Coyotes deal has got to be helping our community, bringing in more people to Glendale who spend in Glendale. I don’t want our festivals to be cut either. It brings people downtown.”
Moses Rodriguez: “We need the parks and pools for our kids. I don’t want crime to go up. I want to live in a safe community, so if it means paying a little extra, that’s OK.”
Margaret Dugan: “I’m concerned about cuts to police and fire. I don’t like paying higher taxes, but to me, they’re worth the services we get. The city needs the money. But we really need to get out of this hockey business, and they should quit fighting the casino. They need the extra money and visitors the casino will bring.”
