Default Tougher immigration measures for newlyweds introduced

Glad to see this. Its about time the government started to make it more difficult to perpetrate immigration fraud. Way too many illegal aliens in this country to begin with (which we probably can't do much about) but this at least is a step in the right direction. Hats off to every immigrant who came to Canada the right way.... right way meaning they followed the rules.

Childless men and women sponsored for Canadian citizens they wed must live together for two years under new regulations targeting widespread marriage fraud.

"There are countless cases of marriage fraud across the country," Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney told reporters Friday at a hotel near Pearson airport, one day after the new regulation was enacted.

The two-year Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations amendments that began Thursday start the day a newcomer receives permanent resident status in Canada - which would be revoked if a couple splits or never lives together, Kenney said, adding that exemptions would be considered by officials in cases involving proven abuse by the sponsor or a relative, neglect or the sponsor's death.

The amendments, which he said are similar to those already in place in Australia, the U.S. and UK, were enacted five months after the Canadian government introduced a measure that prohibits sponsored spouses from sponsoring a new spouse for five years after they become a permanent resident.
