I was in a class about Native culture and customs in the spring, and one of the questions the class brought up was about why one of the people teaching the class called themselves an Indian and why one said Native. The response was generally the more entrenched in the person was in the 'Native' culture as they were raised, the more likely they are to use something like Indian or Native and less likely to use something like First Nations or Aboriginal. As previously mentioned, they normally will refer to themselves as Cree etc before any of those options.

As for political correctness, both said anything but Indian would be universally considered PC.
