Aboriginal person is meant to encompass first nations, metis and Inuit people. First Nations is the official term for all identified groups which are not metis or Inuit. Then they usually self identify as to their tribe; "I'm cree" or "I'm Haida" etc.
It's all a confusing cluster***, especially when they sometimes self identify as Indian, and find the terms native, first nations or aboriginals offensive. On reserve first nations people almost never call themselves aboriginal however, usually just their tribe or first nations person.
In conclusion, no matter what you say you're probably going to piss off somebody.
