I'm not sure how legal matters in the US differ from those in Canada, but in Canada, the burden of proof is different between criminal and civil matters. I believe in oder to convict someone of a crime you must prove beyong a reasonable doubt that said person commiited the actual crime. Civil matters work more on a balance of probabilities ie:is it more likely thatn not that an offense was committed.
