I not a lawyer, I'am sure valo or someone else could explain better, but the answer is yes, the difference is huge. In Criminal court guilt has to be proved beyond a reasonable doubt, while in Civil court guilt only has to be proved based on a preponderance of the evidence. Meaning the culprit is more likely guilty then not, but not necessarily guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
