Something one of my classmates once pointed out during an Organic Chem course. It's one thing to see something - it's just photons that reach your eyes to your brain. It's completely another thing when you smell something like poop.
Actual physical particles have to reach you and enter into your nose for you to ever actually "smell". So you're not just "smelling" something, you're actually touching it . . . with the inside of your nose, mouth, lungs, let alone whatever exposed skin you have.
