It's tough to determine if it's a cold or influenza when symptoms begin, but influenza's biggest indicator is fever and chills, as well as body aches that make around 30% (very rough number) confined to bed for up to a week, usually 3-10 days.
So they both start out the same with cough, nasal congestion and general weakness, but influenza symptoms will usually last longer, be presented with fever of around 38-39 degrees Celsius and the body aches and pains could end up being so severe that you can't leave the bed.
