In the comics it explains how herds are formed. Knowing what I have read from the comics I don't find it hard to believe that most roads around them were blocked with large herds.

They did mention that they could back track and go around the herd but it would take days (or some time) and they had already been that way and gotten all the supplies that were left that way. Doesn't make sense to back track when you are short on supplies, you would likely die before you made it around the herd.
