What bothered me more was what was the enormous rush to take the rest of the prison? Why not take it more cautious. Open up the doors and wait and see what walkers come out, scout around the building, secure one piece at a time, ect.

They weren't trying to take the whole prison, they were trying to find their way to the cafeteria. Which is where they ended up.
