I think Hershel lives. In the comic the guy who has his leg cut off dies (I think it was the twins' dad? They said in the Talking Dead it was Dale, but I seem to remember differently), but I think they'll go a different path for the TV version.

2 characters got bit in the legs and had them amputated. first one was the twins dad who later died. the second was Dale who survived. i think with Dale already dead they're going to use that plot device for Herschel, so he lives for now

i just can't imagine that they would off Herschel in the first episode of the season when they could have given him a more dramatic end in the season 2 finale by staying on the farm if they wanted his character dead. hell he even went through the trouble of growing a beard
