he was falling at about 80 m/s when he pulled his chute. He needed another 17 seconds to break the 4:36 record. In that time he would have fallen another 1360 meters, or nearly 4500 feet (assuming constant velocity).
Basically he was falling to fast to have a shot at breaking the 4:36 record
