The law is VERY grey.

It also puts a lot of the burden of proof on the gun owner for 'proving' to the cops after the fact that he/she had safe storage. For the record I have both my gun safes drilled into the wall. This is because criminals have been known to walk out of houses carrying the entire safe if it is locked, then dealing with it after. Police actually have charged people for unsafe storage if they manage to steal the case, no matter how large it is - you basically have to have bolts ripped out of the wall to prove that you had it secure enough.
