I'd say ask the vet flat out: Is there a reasonable chance the ailment can be cured/managed? If the answer is yes, and you're willing to eat the cost, go ahead. If the honest answer is no, put the cat down. If you're already constantly taking it to the vet, then not only is the cat extremely sick with unknown hope of recovery, but also badly stressed, which is likely not helping the first problem at all.
