Because... the whole nature of developing an opinion on a piece of entertainment is comparison to other pieces of entertainment?

Someone could see the worst movie ever, but if it was the only movie they'd ever seen, it would seem amazing. Only when they saw other, better ones and made comparisons would they know they were incorrect.

Critique is comparison. There are no good stories, performances, writing, effects, action, set-pieces, or cinematography without first knowing and understanding the bad ones. Or simply ones that you prefer over another.
