One of the differences in injuries between Calgary and Edmonton is (I believe) Edmonton lost 6 Dlinemen. That's the entire group you dress for a game. I don't view it as an as excuse but that's a lot harder than losing 2 or 3 like Calgary did.
Injuries balance out over the course of the season.
I don't think Morley being out has hurt the Stamps at all. Randle is a better cover guy and doesn't take the major penalty per game like Morley tended to do for a while.
Edit: you're right in saying Edmonton's biggest problem is communication. Dress two kickers and don't tell them which one is kicking the field goal!
