Yeah, it will work for you assuming you're in reasonable shape. I haven't taken one but basically devised my own program and went on to run sub-3-hour marathons twice.
Seriously, pretty much anyone who can walk fine can run 5K. It's not hard. Set your sights higher; aim for 10K as that's also achievable. I'd bet you can run 5K immediately with no training. That's not hard.
