That would only happen if the item was tagged. Most items at a grocery store are not.
All items should have a SKU (regular barcode) that is scanned at the till which has all the inventory info. All that barcode does is input the number that the item is inventoried under. Thats why when the sku or barcode is missing, they'll call someone who will tell them a number they'll have to manually punch in.
The security tags (can be "hard" like the ones on clothes, or "soft" like the ones on video games) are usually scanned seperately on a different scanner when their purchased that disables them. Or they're removed.
