Not always, I suggest you get an ultra sound and see if there are any really big stones. My second attack lasted 3 hours because a large stone got lodged in the tube(and it wasn't even the largest). I was freaked because morphine works for about 5 minutes on me for some reason and my body spits it out! Fortunately the ER doctor called in another doc and he made me a narcotic "cocktail" with demerol and a couple of other crazy drugs that had me asking "whats a gall bladder?"
Be very careful trying to live with something like this, there have been cases of pain like this causing a heart attack.
As for costs in the USA, A friend of a friend from New Hampshire went to Cancun and had the key-hole surgery for $1100.00 and recovered by laying on a nice beach for a few days...there's always options.
