When I went to Auckland a couple of years ago, I found that the jet lag wasn't as bad as I expected. Because of the long flight, the massive time difference, and the dateline, my entire concept of date and time was completely reset, I think!
I'd try and sleep on the LA/Sydney flight as it'll be overnight anyway. By the time you arrive in Australia you'll be starting a whole new day. A really early, weird day. But I'd get some sleep while you can on that flight, plus it will help with the boredom.
Coming home was more difficult for me, and it seemed to take a week to get back into the groove here. I find that going W-E is tougher than going E-W, but I don't have any science to back it up - just my own experience.
