But then when someone else did it, they would have just cancelled all agreements and it wouldn't have gained you anything. Howevert, you almost always had trade, so it might have worked, except then it would have made it much more likely that someone else would have taken it before you.
I suspect Trade (and cash flow in general) is more important for races that require big spending for purchasing large fleets or to develop tech etc. If you would have turned it into a trade war and essentially turned off all that cash, you would have most hurt Seb and most benefit me, because I only required minimal cash, since buying large fleets was not part of my strategy and I got enough free tech that I was able to advance without putting money into anything but ships.
Now, if you and Aenaes had 'teamed up' and between the 2 of you kept the trade strategy, and just maintained a single agreement between yourselves, that would have been certainly viable. I also think having each player with 2 strategies meant that it was more likely that trade was taken as a second option than it would have been in a 5 or 6 player game.
I think it might be a valid strategy though, for at least the early portion of the game. ie build up and then lash out.
