This is one sad and odd story, it sounds like intended to burglarize his dad's house, but I am assuming he lived there too. This is one of the reasons I am against guns, but I fully support non lethal self defence weapons such as pepper spray.
Edit: on second reading I realized that yes the son was trying to break in to the neigbours house.
