Only company innovating is obviously a bit of a hyperbole, but the fact remains that Apple has never been willing to accept the status quo. Micro/mini USB may be a perfectly fine standard, but obviously, it wasn't a good enough standard for Apple. They wanted a connector that was more user friendly, even if the difference is small. I haven't tried the lightning connector yet, but a reversible connection would be awesome. Not too mention that lightning is more capable than the various USB options.
Maybe if I had various devices from different manufacturers, I'd be more annoyed at having different charging standards. My experience though has always been that pretty much everything has incompatible chargers. My wife had a Nokia phone, and then got the same model, which had the identical charger. Somehow, the new phone wouldn't charge from the old charger. Apple's cords have worked much better in my experience. I still have a old 30 pin cord that still has the release buttons on the side, that still works great, for all of the newer apple devices after it.
The 30 pin connector has lived it's lifespan and needed to be replaced. Apple created something that they thought could be used for the next 10 years. I think it's safe to say that micro/mini USB won't be around 10 years from now.
